October 7, 2025

Welcome to the October newsletter.

I just got back from Italy late last night but if I manage nothing else today, this newsletter is going to go out! We spent an awesome day and a half visiting Matera and Gravina.

No matter what else you think about No Time to Die, the pre-title sequence locations were absolutely stunning and as soon as I saw they were filming there I knew I wanted to go. Finally I did it! The fact that my wife and I flew there on Global James Bond Day was a bonus too!

We walked 22km while there - about 14 miles - so I need a bit of time to regain full use of my legs. It's not exactly flat there and forget getting around Matera by any other kind of transport other than your feet. It's just not built that way. There are some drivable roads in the Sassi (the old town), but if you really want to get a feel for the place you need to follow along the narrow passageways with an infinite number of stone steps.

Matera is a really amazing place to visit and it's a shame that it gets so little screen time in No Time to Die. I'd have loved to stay a bit longer but for me it's just not possible at the moment. And no, I wasn't remotely tempted to attempt Bond's jump off the bridge in Gravina!

Anyway, look out for my report on my trip on YouTube - just as soon as I can edit it all. I've got a ton of footage to plough through hand edit into something at least semi-watchable.

Last month marked a new era for 007, as London Operations LLC now controls the rights to James Bond in place of Danjaq, as we report below.

Presumably this is the joint venture between Amazon MGM and Eon Productions that was referred to in the February announcement. The name may be unimaginative, but it brings Danjaq’s decades-long stewardship to an end.

In September the focus has been on Thunderball, which not only is my favourite Bond film but also celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. We spent 2 episodes looking back at the film then talk to Neil S Bulk, who has just produced an expanded and remastered 60th anniversary edition of the Thunderball soundtrack on La La Land records. It's a great interview and his passion for Bond music and Thunderball itself absolutely shines through.

NEWS

The Dossier's news desk has been kept a little more busy than in recent months with a variety of things to report. Here we go!

John Barry’s sweeping score for Thunderball gets a deluxe restoration with unreleased material and new mixes

La-La Land Records has announced a 60th anniversary remastered and expanded 2-CD edition of Thunderball, the fourth James Bond film and a landmark in the evolution of 007’s cinematic sound. Featuring music by John Barry, this limited run of 5,000 units is likely to appeal to Bond fans and collectors alike.

James Bond’s long absence from video games finally ends in March next year as a 30 minute gameplay video is released

When Bond fans were last handed a controller, it was to replay classics like Goldeneye 007 or endure the last of the Craig-era tie-ins. But now, after over a decade in the shadows, James Bond is back in action—this time in 007 First Light, a bold, cinematic prequel from the makers of Hitman. And we finally have a release date: 27th March 2026.

Steven Knight says he’s yet to get started on the next James Bond film and confirms the next 007 actor is yet to be chosen

Steven Knight, the writer tapped to script Bond 26, has confirmed that writing hasn’t started and that the film is moving ahead without an actor in place. Asked by Radio Times whether the script is being written without a new 007 in mind, Knight replied: “Er
yes,” before adding, “You don’t know what’s going to happen until you start writing.”

The search for a new James Bond will only begin after Denis Villeneuve finishes Dune 3

Bond 26 will begin its search for a new 007 in 2026, with casting to commence once director Denis Villeneuve finishes work on Dune: Part Three. For readers of The James Bond Dossier, none of this will come as a surprise. I’ve consistently argued since Daniel Craig handed back his keys to the DB5 that no casting would occur without both a director and a script. Once Villeneuve was confirmed, it was clear he’d need to wrap Dune before even thinking about who would take over as 007.

Danjaq is no longer the name behind 007, with a new company now holding Bond’s identity

When Amazon was handed the creative wheel of the James Bond franchise on 20th February 2025, one detail was buried beneath the headlines: Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, and Amazon MGM Studios had agreed to form a new entity to oversee Bond’s intellectual property. What that entity was called remained a mystery—until now.

Cyril Blake’s ‘Bonding’ blends humour and poignancy in a story of how James Bond shapes one man’s life

At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year, Gareth Welsh stumbled upon something special. While waiting for a bus, he noticed a billboard for a show called ‘Bonding’. Instead of boarding, he walked straight to the box office — and that decision made his day.

Sean Connery’s era revisited, with his six James Bond films ranked and re-evaluated through a modern lens

Sean Connery set the gold standard for James Bond. His six official films between 1962 and 1971 defined the role for generations and established the essential elements of the series — from the dry wit to the tailored suits, and the sense of danger behind the charm.

YOUTUBE

I've been more active on YouTube lately and have had great response to some of my recent videos. I didn't publish anything during August because of my holiday, but will be back soon with a brand new video for you.

I know not everyone likes to get their information from YouTube, but if you do then be sure to check out my channel.

In this video I go skin-diving in the Mediterranean, exploring seagrass meadows, searching for an octopus, and comparing the experience with the undersea adventures of 007. This video was a lot of fun to make and something I'd been wanting to do for quite a while now. Finally this summer I actually did something about it. Enjoy!

Ian Fleming’s Talk of the Devil is a brand-new 2025 collection of the author’s lesser-known non-Bond writings, including a memo from while he worked in wartime intelligence, journalism and short stories, and includes vivid pieces about Jamaica and the underwater world. But is it really worth reading for fans of James Bond and Fleming’s literary work?

The latest Bond 26 news suggests casting will begin in 2026. Denis Villeneuve will only begin casting the next James Bond after finishing Dune: Part Three. In this video, I break down Baz Bamigboye’s latest report for Deadline, what it means for the future of 007, and why the casting timeline won’t surprise readers of The James Bond Dossier.
